Ever since I was little I have had an interest in Greek Mythology, as I grew I found I had a soft spot for Medusa and her being seen as a monster when she was originally a victim. Then with the many strong survivors speaking out during the #MeToo movement I recognized that Medusa also had a story that had been silenced.
So, for my master's thesis project I hope to give her the chance to tell her story. Using an interactive bust that allows users to unveil the many layers of her origin story in order to understand the reason she was turned into a monster and who truly lies beneath the outward portrayal.
For this project, I created the the bust of Medusa using air dry clay and plastic toy snakes that I painted. The cracks, which are my favorite part, pull on the idea of the Japanese art Kintsugi where broken pottery is repaired using lacquer and gold dust. This brings out the broken pieces that make up the piece's, or in this case Medusa's history. Atop the bust are layers of fabric where each layer, when pulled away, triggers a soundscape that represents a part of her story.
